Even though vertical urban farming and hydroponic Green Walls are seen as a fancy new trend of the 21st century, it’s debatable if the natural resources they use are worth the small advantages they offer. Often, they seem more like a gimmick trying to ride the green wave.
Back ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ฌโ๐, Fruit Walls and urban farming didn’t rely on plastic containers attached to walls; they simply used traditional methods and knowledge that showed growing plants near walls could help warm-loving fruits thrive, even in cooler climates.
While the stone or brick wall absorbs and reflects the sunlight during the day, the stored heat in the wall is slowly released during the night preventing frost damage. Additionally, the wall protected the fruits from cold North winds, creating an ideal microclimate to grow Mediterranean fruits even in ๐๐ป๐ด๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ก๐ฒ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ without using any additional energy. Growing plants from well-prepared soil up provides substantially more rooting space and reduces maintenance to bare minimum.
Long-standing gardening knowledge passed down through generations could become even more important for sustainable green infrastructure than we think, especially if we aim to cut down on natural resource and plastic usage.
